"We often get asked, as an automaker why we support cycling. The answer really is simply that it's a shared passion for the environment and also for healthy living. We don't see cars and bikes as competing with each other. Indeed, if you look at most garages around the country, you see both cars and bike in them. As far as we're concerned, they're very much natural partners."

Andy Berke, Mayor, City of Chattanooga
"We know that we have this fantastic event for the next three years. That's a real opportunity for our city. We've built ourselves as a city on the outdoors, quality of life experience, looking at the mountains and rivers and the great natural assets we have. We appreciate the fact that this event is here and that you can play a role in showing people what Chattanooga really is. As we look to the future, we will continue to be a leader in the outdoors and we hope you enjoy your experience here and enjoy seeing the great place that Chattanooga is."

Donna Bourdon, President of Continucare, Erlanger Hospital
"We're so excited to have all of the support for the charity ride that we've received throughout the community. As you know, we're raising money to do renovations of the children's rooms, in particular the oncology rooms. We take care of a number of children with childhood cancer and we're very, very proud to be part of the work that's happening here to have the charity ride going on tomorrow and we're so thrilled to be involved with this very special event and so pleased to be a sponsor for the next three years, as well."

Doug Rodgers, Executive Director, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Tennessee
"UnitedHealthcare Community Plan is a managed care organization that provides benefits to our youth and others through the TennCare program in the state of Tennessee. We were at the Eastlake Community Center earlier today where we donated $1,000 to the center for the purchase of stationary bikes. Two of the athletes, John Murphy and Dan Summerhill, and they spent some time with the kids talking to them. We had probably 30 or 40 kids in attendance. They spoke to them about the importance of health and wellness, diet and exercise. If you think about it, these are children that have the potential to be cyclists and world-class competitors, themselves. All they need is the encouragement and opportunity. We think with the donation we gave this morning and other support that we have with our community partners shows the community that we can make a huge difference in the lives of these kids."

Ian Lawless, Executive Director, U.S. Handcycling
"This is the fifth year that we have partnered with USA Cycling to include a national criterium championship for handcyclists as part of the USA Cycling Professional Road National Championships. We're very honored to be part of that as we have been for the last four years. For me, it's really great to see our handcyclists up here with the pro cyclists talking about cycling because that's really what this is all about, this is about bike racing and about how cycling can improve your health, your overall well being, your morale. It's so fantastic for us to be involved in such a prestgious event. We really are honored."

Steve Johnson, President and CEO, USA Cycling
"We're very proud and honored to have the women riding with the men for the first time in the history of this event. It has been a longstanding initiative of USA Cycling and me personally to elevate the status of women's professional cycling. This is one of many components to that. For people that have been paying attention, you have noticed the United States has emerged as not just a men's cycling power, but a women's cycling power as well. It's really exciting to have the women here with the men."

RIDERS:
Brent Bookwalter (Asheville, N.C./BMC Racing Team) placed third in the time trial at the 2012 Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships
On his chances to win the time trial after coming close recently

"I sure hope so. I had a few cracks at the USA Cycling professional road national title whether it be in the time trial or the road race. I've been close on a few occasions, but I haven't been able to seal the deal. I'm really motivated in Chattanooga, this weekend. I was fortunate enough to call Chattanooga home for a year while my now wife was going to college here at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. It feels like a special place. It feels like home as far as bike racing is concerned. We're not only in the United States, but we're in the southeast. We're in a place that I really enjoyed living in and feel connected to."

Lawson Craddock (Austin, Texas/Bontrager Cycling Team) won the Best Young Rider at the 2013 Amgen Tour of California
On the USA Cycling National Development Program
"I've spent the better part of the last six seasons in Europe. USA Cycling has done an excellent job of finding young kids who have great passion for the sport at a young age. The first time I went over to Europe was 16 years old. I had the extreme opportunity and I've been back every year since then. There are a lot of guys and girls up here that owe a lot to the USA Cycling National Development Program. What they're doing is they're paving the way for the next generation of American cycling. It's pretty clear that that generation is coming now. It's a very exciting future for us, as well."

Alfredo De los Santos (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), U.S. Handcyclist
On when he decided to be a handcyclist
"For me, when I got wounded, I had a lot of questions. One of them was I wanted to be productive for my family, for myself. Because I had PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), I was constantly very aggressive. I didn't know how to deal with it. When I was in the hospital, I was around the right people and they introduced me to handcycling. Through handcycling, I was able to physically and mentally connect myself and to the point that I was riding two hours per day. From two hours per day, I was doing 40 miles per week and now I'm to the point I just want to take it to the next level. I'm part of the development program for Rio 2016. I'm just going to keep pushing myself."

Timmy Duggan (Nederland, Colo./Team Saxo-Tinkoff) won the road race at the 2012 Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships
On being the national champion
"It's a huge honor. Career defining, absolutely. If you talk to someone on the street and you say you're a national champion, it doesn't even matter what sport it is, they know what that means. It's been a huge honor to pull on that Stars-and-Stripes jersey every single day for a year. To be able to wear that jersey at some of the great events we have here in the United States - Tour of Utah, USA Pro Cycling Challenge, Amgen Tour of California - in front of the home fans. It was a thrill all year long that I'll never forget."

Megan Guarnier (Mountain View, Calif./Rabobank) won the elite women's road race at the 2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships
On the level of competition among American women
"I think being the American national champion and then going to race for the number one ranked team in the world that that's a good example of where women's cycling is in America. You have teams like Specialized-lululemon, who has a strong American presence in Europe, and seeing what we are constantly being compared with in the U.S. USA Cycling brings us over to Europe and we get a taste of what European racing is like and what we have to do to be the top in the world. We bring that back here. Every year it just gets more competitive and more competitive. We go back to Europe and the European teams start to turn their head and see how much talent is coming up in America. I think that speaks to the level in America."

Kiel Reijnen (Boulder, Colo./UnitedHealthcare) finished third in the road race at the 2012 Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Road & time Trial National Championships
On the courses in Chattanooga
"We just checked out the course this morning. We had a really enjoyable ride with people out honking and cheering for us, welcoming us to town. That's huge because having that sense of community for us is what makes the event. The events we talk about after the race, the events we get excited about year in, year out are the ones where the community rallies behind us. They're out there cheering. It makes it worth it for us. We don't want to go race out there by ourselves in a parking lot. We want to be out there. We want to be involved in the community. We want to be involved with the sponsors. We've already got that here. It's great."

Jeff Snover (Evans, Ga.), U.S. Handcyclist
On becoming a handcyclist
"For me, I was introduced to handcycling early on in my rehab process. Having been active duty military and an athlete before, I needed something. I had to have something. It was probably a year or year and a half after my injury, that I said, 'This is a sport I could actually compete in. I'm not just going to be a participant. I'm going to be an athlete.' It took me a little while to get to that level where I could compete, jumped in. It's been a process of entering races, working with a coach, training and becoming an athlete again."

Evelyn Stevens (Dennis, Mass./Specialized-lululemon) finished second at the 2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships
On the women's national championships being held with the men's national championships
"I just want to say thank you to the sponsors, USA Cycling and Volkswagen for including the women in this event. I think America is leading the way for women's cycling and I think this event is going to showcase how exciting we race and the talent we have. I'm thrilled to be in Chattanooga. You're not lying when you say the community here in very welcoming."

PHOTO GALLERY

You never think about those personal awards in a team sport,” said Todhunter, who won the U.S. men’s national title twice. “Firstly, this is a team award because no matter what I do as a coach it has to be translated on the ice. It is another award for Team Erika Brown. I’m fortunate to coach a team that has four women who could have each easily been named Athlete of the Year.”

When Todhunter hung up his competitive curling shoes a few years ago, he turned to coaching. “I always looked at it as a way to give back to our sport,” said Todhunter, who also coached Erika Brown to a fifth-place finish at the 2010 World Women’s Championship as well. “It never really crossed my mind which gender or age group that I wanted to coach; I just knew that I wanted to be with a team who wanted a coach. Team Brown is committed to being the best they can be. As good as they are, and as smart as they are, they are still always trying to find ways to improve.”

One of the best ways to do this is by attending a USA Cycling Regional Talent Identification Camp. The primary goal of the Talent ID Camps is to recognize athletes who, at an early age, show signs of potential future success in cycling. Receiving instruction from some of USA Cycling’s finest coaches, the camps also provide the necessary framework to improve the athletes skill set thus progressing their talent development. In some cases, the Regional Talent ID Camps assist in selecting riders for international competition and/or a national development camp.

For more information and the full 2013 schedule of USA Cycling’s Regional Talent ID Camps, please click here.

USA Cycling's National Development Programs are supported by the USA Cycling Development Foundation. the USA Basketball Men’s National Team currently enjoying a 50-game winning
streak that dates back to 2006, and winners of back-to-back Olympic gold medals
sandwiched around the 2010 FIBA World Championship gold, USA Basketball
Chairman Jerry Colangelo today announced that Hall of Fame basketball coach Mike
Krzyzewski (Duke University) will
return as head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team for the
2013-16 quadrennium.

            Colangelo’s
announcement means that Krzyzewski
will be back on the bench as head coach of the USA Basketball Men's National
Team program for 2013-16. Over the course of this quad, USA Men’s National
Teams will conduct a team mini-camp in Las Vegas, Nev., July 22-25, 2013;
compete in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup (formerly the FIBA World
Championship) Aug. 30-Sept. 14 in Spain; if necessary, participate in the 2015
FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament (dates and site TBD); and if the
USA qualifies, compete in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games (Aug. 5-21) in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil.

“About four years ago I was asked
about Coach K’s return and what I said then is still true now - when you have a
good thing going you don’t mess with it,” said Colangelo, who has served as the
Managing Director of USA Basketball Men’s National Team program since 2005 and
seen those teams compile a 62-1 record. “I’m delighted to announce that Coach K
has agreed to return as head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team
for 2013-16, and I really can’t be more pleased and excited. He was and still
is the right man to coach the USA National Team.

            “We’ve
seen the value of continuity and Coach K’s return gives our national team
program another four years of continuity.
Together we have been able to build on the program’s successes of each
year and again establish the United States as the world’s number one basketball
country. Repeating our performances from
the previous four years, which included winning gold at the 2010 FIBA World
Championship and the 2012 London Olympics, will be quite a challenge, but it is
one we look forward to undertaking.”

            “It is tough
to give up something you’ve absolutely loved doing for seven years, the people
you’re doing it with, and most importantly, the country you’re doing it for,”
said Krzyzewski. “As a result of my ongoing desire to coach, I’ve decided I'd
like to continue as head coach of the Men’s National Team especially since USA
Basketball wanted me to do so. It just seems like the right thing to do.

“There is no greater honor than to coach your country’s team and to be afforded the unique opportunity to be the National Team coach three times is incredible,” Coach K continued. “I do not take that responsibility lightly. 2008 compiled a striking 36-1 overall win-loss record, and just as importantly
reestablished the USA National Team and its members as positive ambassadors for
the United States and the sport.

The USA squad culminated the 2005-08

2000. The USA National Team also won gold at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship with a 10-0 record to qualify the U.S. men for the 2008 Olympic Games.
With Colangelo and Krzyzewski
returning to lead the USA Basketball National Team for 2009-12, the national
program compiled a perfect 26-0 win-loss record and won gold medals at the 2010
FIBA World Championship and 2012 London Olympics.

All together, since Colangelo and
Krzyzewski teamed up in 2006, USA National Teams have compiled a spectacular
62-1 record over the seven years, and claimed top honors in four of five FIBA
or FIBA Americas competitions.

Since first fielding in 1992 a team

have claimed gold medals in 12 of 15 major international basketball
competitions, while compiling an impressive 117-7 overall record (.944 winning

NBC Sports Network
A one-hour recap show is scheduled to be broadcast on NBC Sports Network at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday, June 2. This will be a recap of the entire event, including interviews and highlights from the men’s and women’s time trials and road races.

WOMEN’S RACES

Megan Guarnier posts up after winning the women's elite race. (Photo by Jonathan Devich)

For the first time in the event's 29-year history, the women will compete for professional national titles. The U.S. is the only country to showcase the women racing the same courses on the same days and for the same prize purses as the men.

Among the women scheduled to compete in Chattanooga is defending champion Megan Guarnier (Mountain View, Calif./Rabobank), who won the elite women's national championship road race in 2012. Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./Pasta Zara Cogeas), who topped the field in the time trial at the 2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships in Augusta, Ga., is unable to compete after crashing in the time trial at the Amgen Tour of California.

Neben's absence leaves the door open for other top competitors in the women's field including Evelyn Stevens (Dennis, Mass./Specialized-lululemon), Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Specialized-lululemon), Jade Wilcoxson (Talent, Ore./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), Alison Powers (Pinecliffe, Colo./NOW and Novartis for MS), Janel Holcomb (San Diego, Calif./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), Kristin McGrath (Boise, Idaho/Exergy TWENTY16), Robin Farina (Smartsville, Calif./NOW and Novartis for MS) and Alison Tetrick (Mill Valley, Calif./Exergy TWENTY16).

MEN'S RACES
On the men's side, one of the two defending national champions are scheduled to toe the line and defend their Stars-and-Stripes jerseys. The winner of the road race in Greenville in 2012, Timmy Duggan (Nederland, Colo./Team Saxo-Tinkoff), is a viable threat to repeat as national champion, but seven-time national champion Dave Zabriskie (Westlake Village, Calif./Garmin-Sharp) is unable to compete due to a crash in California.

A few of the riders vying to earn the Stars-and-Stripes are Brent Bookwalter (Asheville, N.C./BMC Racing Team), Matthew Busche (Wauwatosa, Wis./RadioShack-Nissan) and Lawson Craddock (Austin, Texas/Bontrager Cycling Team). Bookwalter is poised to improve on his third-place result in the time trial last year. Busche used a late sprint to narrowly win the road race at the 2011 event while Craddock recently won Best Young Rider at the Amgen Tour of California. Noted sprinter, Tyler Farrar (Seattle, Wash./Garmin-Sharp), who won the third stage of the Amgen Tour of California on May 15, is also scheduled to compete.

COURSE DETAILS
The picturesque courses, revealed during a press conference in January, will utilize many of the iconic roads from the former Tour de Georgia UCI stage race.

The time trial course will be held adjacent to the Volkswagen Chattanooga Plant and features rolling terrain with few turns. Riders will complete two out-and-back runs of 9.5 miles each for a total of 19 miles. The course layout has four turnarounds and will allow spectators to see each rider multiple times.

The road races will showcase downtown Chattanooga along with the tough climb up Lookout Mountain. The men’s and women’s races will begin with a 5.1-mile start circuit — one circuit for the women and three for the men. The same circuit will be used for the finish of each race. The course then takes the riders on a relatively flat run along Broad Street to begin the climb up Ochs Highway. The climb is approximately three miles and climbs 1,150 feet each lap. The race will top out on top of Lookout Mountain and descend on Scenic Highway to return to downtown via Broad Street. Men will complete four laps up the climb, while the women will do two laps. The “long lap” is 16.1 miles in distance. The men and women will complete the start/finish circuits each lap of the “long lap” and will finish the race with three 5.1-mile circuits each. The course will cross the Market Street and Veterans Bridge each lap, and spectators will see the riders cross through the start/finish line 11 times during the men’s race and eight times during the women’s race.

SCHEDULE
The racing begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the U.S. Handcycling Series Time Trial. The top women are slated to contest the time trial beginning at 11 a.m. before the men take the course at 2 p.m.

The women's road race opens Monday's racing at 9 a.m., when they'll begin their 102-kilometer contest. The handcycling criterium national championship is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. The 165-kilometer pro men's road race, which begins at 1:15 p.m., caps the event.

ANCILLARY EVENTS
On Saturday, May 25, at 8 a.m., the Children's Hospital Cycle for Miracles will take place at Enterprise South Industrial Park, the site of the time trials later the same day. Proceeds from the event will support Children's Hospital at Erlanger. Riders of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to participate in rides of 15, 30 or 60 miles. For sign up information, please visit the registration website.

On Monday, May 27, at 3 p.m., there will be the UnitedHealthcare Kids Race. Free and open to children aged 3-12, staging begins at the start/finish line of the road races at 2:30 p.m.

Grant made the race look easy as he pulled away to a comfortable lead late in the race to win the men’s Pro/Open division and take the early lead in the Pro UET men's standings.

Grant and David "Tinker" Juarez (Whittier, Calif./Sho-Air - Cannondale) broke away early on the day’s first climb and were never seen again by the rest of the men’s field. Both Sho-Air/Cannondale riders continued to build their early advantage, as they worked together over the course of a couple of hours. But then there were some chinks in the armor, and Juarez was first to feel the pace set by Grant.

Heading out onto the third lap of four laps, Grant began to distance himself from Juarez by more than three minutes, while Juarez and Grant had nearly 15 minutes on third place finisher Eric Bostrom (Westlake Village, Calif./Sho-Air - Cannondale).

From there Grant was on cruise control and rolled home for the win, while Ryan Clark (Laguna Hills, Calif./Audi - Felt) and Kip Biese (Colorado Springs, Colo./KJ Bike Coaching) rounded out the final spots on the men's podium.

Mata, who is just returning to racing after breaking her fibula in March, led the 50- mile women's race wire-to-wire and looks to be hitting her stride in taking the top spot in the Pro UET women's standings. At one point in the race, Mata was placed in the top five overall out of all Pro UET riders, including the men.

In the end, Mata won by nearly 25 minutes over second-place rider Jessica Cera (Encinitas, Calif./Focus) and third-place finisher Serena Gordon (Bend, Ore./All Access Racing).

Full results from the US Cup - Sagebrush Safari 50

Check out a photo gallery from the US Cup - Sagebrush Safari 50

USA Cycling Pro UET Standings:

Men's Standings
1.
