Marshall to Receive Award at the Arnold Sports Classic on Sunday

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Three of the United States’ premier weightlifters will be entered into the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame as the Class of 2011.

Karyn Marshall (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) dominated the women’s heavy and super heavyweight divisions during the 1980s, earning a World Championship title in 1987 and three silver medals at the 1988, 1989 and 1990 Worlds.

Marshall, who earned her first of nine national titles in 1981 as a 75kg lifter, won national championships in three weight divisions and still holds all three American Records in the 82.5 and +82.5kg divisions.

Marshall will be presented with an award to recognize her induction during the Arnold Weightlifting Championships on Sunday at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Ohio.
Tara Cunningham (State College, Pa.) made history at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney when she became the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic medal and the first U.S. lifter to win Olympic gold in nearly 40 years.

A seven-time National title holder in the 48kg, 50kg and 53kg divisions, Cunningham also earned two Pan American Games gold medals before retiring after the 2004 Olympic Games.
Cunningham currently holds the snatch, clean and jerk and total American records in the 48kg division and the snatch record in the 53kg division.

Cunningham’s teammate at the 2000 and 2004 Games, Shane Hamman (Edmond, Okla.) also is being inducted into the hall of fame.

Often referred to as the “strongest man in America” during his career, Hamman holds all three American records in the +105kg division and won every national title between 1997 and 2005. A consistent figure on the international scene, Hamman earned a top-five finish at the 2002 World Championships and top-seven finishes at the 2003 Worlds and 2004 Olympic Games.

Cunningham and Hamman will receive their awards at a date to be determined later this year.
