Changshu, China - May 30 - The U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team
picked up their second straight win at the FINA World League Super Final
with an 8-4 win over Greece. Brenda Villa (Commerce,
CA/Stanford/Olympic Club) led the way with four goals on offense and
Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/Michigan/NYAC) went the distance in net,
stopping 11 shots.
Team USA was in control early building a 2-0 lead after the first and a
4-1 lead at halftime. In the third, they kept it up outscoring the
Greeks 3-2 to take a 7-3 lead going to the fourth. In the final period
the teams were even with a goal apiece to finish with USA in front 8-4.
Team USA did the job with almost exclusively natural goals, going 0/1 on
power plays and 1/1 on penalty shots. Greece was 3/6 power plays and
did not attempt a penalty shot.
"We played well defensively today but lacked in offensive execution. We
hope that we can play well on both ends of the pool tomorrow," said USA
Head Coach Adam Krikorian.
