WATER POLO: 2012 Olympic Draw Announced

London, England - May 5 - The FINA Official Draw for the Men's & Women's Olympic Games Water Polo Tournaments 2012 to take place in London (GBR) was held today at the Aquatic Centre, following the conclusion of the afternoon matches of the Water Polo Test Event in the Water Polo Arena. The draw was attended and conducted by the FINA Executive – Dr. Julio C. Maglione (President), Paolo Barelli (Honorary Secretary), Pipat Paniangvait (Honorary Treasurer) and Cornel Marculescu (Executive Director) -, and by TWPC representatives – Gianni Lonzi (Chairman), Richard Foster (Vice Chairman), John Whitehouse (Honorary Secretary) and Dimitris Diathesopoulos (Bureau Liaison).

The U.S. Olympic Men's Water Polo Team was placed in Group B with Hungary, Montenegro, Romania, Great Britain and Serbia. Group A consists of Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Spain, Australia and Croatia. Team USA will open competition at the Olympic Games on July 29 against Montenegro. That will be followed with matches against Romania, Great Britain, Serbia and Hungary in preliminary play.

The U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team was placed in Group A with Hungary, Spain and China. Group B consists of Italy, Great Britain, Russia, and Australia. Team USA will open competition at the Olympic Games on July 30 against Hungary. That will be followed with matches against Spain and China in preliminary play.

Both USA teams qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games by virtue of Gold Medals at the 2011 Pan American Games. Each team is the defending Olympic Silver Medalist.
