JUDO: U.S. Women Take Gold In Team Comp At PanAm Championships; Added To 10 Medals Total In Individual Comp

USA Judo’s five-member female squad took GOLD today in team competition at the super-elite Pan American Championships in Costa Rica, capping a weekend with U.S. athletes having already scored a total of 10 medals in individual competition, including a gold and two silver.

The U.S. women’s team defeated Mexico 5-0 in the finals to claim the championship after downing Canada and Brazil at a tournament reserved for the best-of-the-best from nations throughout the Americas.

Fighting on the U.S. women’s team were: Olympic Bronze Medalist Marti Malloy, 57 kg. (USA Judo National Training Site, San Jose State University Judo, San Jose, CA), Angelica Delgado, 52 kg. (USA Judo National Training Site, Ki-Itsu-Sai Training Center, Miami, FL), Hannah Martin, 63 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY), Katie Sell, 70 kg. (USA Judo Training Site, Olympic Training Center, CO), and Bianca Lockette, 78+kg. (Florissant, MO).

Team competition in judo has become increasingly important as the International Judo Federation and other organizations mount a bid to include team competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Each nation today put teams of five male and five female players forward. The team winning the best-of-five matches advanced to fight the next team.

The U.S. men’s team went 2-2 today, besting Costa Rica and Mexico but losing to Canada and Cuba to fall just short of the podium.

Fighting on the U.S. men’s team were Nick Delpopolo, 73 kg. (Budokan Judo Club, Miami, FL), Brad Bolen, 66 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY), Travis Stevens, 81 kg. ( USA Judo National Training Site, Pedro’s Judo Center/NYAC, Wakefield, Mass.), Jacob Larsen, 90 kg. (Boulder Judo Training Center, USA Judo National Training Site, Olympic Training Center, CO), and +100kg: Deshawn Howard, 100+ kg. (Harvey’s Judo, Jackson, MS).

Inidividual competition commenced Friday in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. Taking bronze medals on Day One were Olympian Travis Stevens and Jonathan Fernandez (Baragua Judo Kai, Miami, FL.) in the 81 kg division. In the 90kg division, Jacob Larsen, (Boulder Judo Training Center, USA Judo National Training Site, Olympic Training Center, CO), joined his teammates in taking a bronze.

Among the women on Day One, Hannah Martin, 63 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY), and Olympic Gold Medalist Kayla Harrison, 70 kg. (USA Judo National Training Site, Pedro’s Judo Center/NYAC, Wakefield, MA), took bronze.

On Day Two, Nick Delpopolo took a gold medal in individual competition, finishing the final match against Cuba with a throw for ippon.

Marti Malloy and Adonis Diaz, 55 kg. (Budokan Judo Club, Miami, FL) captured the two silver medals for Team USA.

Brad Bolen and Nick Kossor, 60 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY) both climbed the podium for bronze.
