U.S. Olympic Committee to bring Road to London Celebration, presented by Hilton HHonors, to Times Square April 18

Colorado Springs, Colo. – The U.S. Olympic Committee and presenting sponsor Hilton HHonors, the loyalty program for Hilton Worldwide’s 10 distinct hotel brands, will kick off the 100-day countdown to the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games by transforming the heart of Times Square into a festive Olympic Village for one remarkable day, complete with dozens of athletes, sport demonstrations, giveaways, autograph sessions, interactive sport experiences, and more than just a touch of London. April 18 will awaken the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games throughout New York City, shining a spotlight on the inspiring stories of the athletes who make up Team USA.

WHY: Fans are invited to join America’s athletes as they celebrate the 100 day countdown to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

Starting at 10 a.m. EST, the magic and excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games will take over Times Square. Free and open to the public, Olympic and Paralympic activity will take place throughout the day, including:
  • Dozens of Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls – names of specific athletes will be released in the coming weeks
  • Athlete autograph sessions
  • Athlete demonstrations in beach volleyball, BMX cycling, boxing, fencing, gymnastics, judo, sitting volleyball, taekwondo and track & field
    • Fun facts: the BMX cycling course will include a 17 foot tall ramp, and 100 tons of silky sand will be trucked in for the full beach volleyball court
  • Interactive sport experiences that invite fans to step into the action: cycle the London Olympic course, challenge a friend to a rowing competition, lift an Olympic weight for a photo opportunity and more
  • Photo stations for fans to take shots and share online, including standing on an Olympic podium, inside a red double-decker British bus, or posing with a British Beefeater
  • Sponsor giveaways and sampling
  • Visits from members of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Team who competed at the last Games held in London
  • Surprise celebrity guests
  • The opportunity to donate to Team USA and support America’s athletes

Fans can also follow the making of Team USA and the stories of America’s athletes at TeamUSA.org. “The Road to London Video Series,” presented by Hilton HHonors, currently features 32 weekly episodes and gives fans behind-the-scenes access to America’s top athletes as they work to represent Team USA. From competition recaps to sit-down interviews, the series has featured a number of athletes, including Brady Ellison (archery), Shawn Johnson (gymnastics), Michael Phelps (swimming), Myles Porter (Paralympic judo), Christine Rampone (soccer) and Rau’Shee Warren (boxing).
Beginning April 18, the series will feature daily installments leading up to the Opening Ceremony of the London Games on July 27, offering fans a chance to  follow all of the action as athletes qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams.
