U.S. Athletes Brady Ellison and Braden Gellenthien Earn World No. 1 Ranking and Men’s Recurve and Compound Teams Ranked First

FITA, the international federation for archery, announced the updated 2010 World Rankings and the United States has climbed into the No. 1 positions in several classes. Leading the way is 2008 U.S. Olympian Brady Ellison (Chula Vista, Calif.) in men’s individual recurve, and 2010 Archery World Cup Stage 3 champion Braden Gellenthien (Woodbridge, Va.) in men’s individual compound.

For the first time the men’s recurve and men’s compound teams are both ranked No. 1 at the same time in the 2010 World Rankings. This is in part to their gold-medal performances at the 2010 Archery World Cup Stage 3 event in Ogden, Utah earlier this month. The U.S. men’s recurve team moved up five spots and overtook Korea with 319.25 points. The U.S. men’s compound team continues to hold down is No. 1 spot with a 410.75 point total, which is almost 130 points better than No. 2 El Salvador.

Ellison, who is also the No. 1 ranked archer in the World Cup standings, has turned 2010 into a career year by winning the Croatia World Cup, finishing third at the Turkey World Cup and claiming the Arizona Cup title. Ellison also won the Croatia World Cup in mixed team competition, and the Ogden World Cup team event. These performances have jumped him to the No. 1 World Ranking with 211.350 points. 2009 World Championships silver medalist Dong-Hyun Im of Korea is second with 190.7 points.

Three-time U.S. Olympian Vic Wunderle (Charlotte, N.C.) is ranked 11th overall with 138.406 in men’s individual recurve.

The men’s individual compound rankings are highlighted by three Team USA members. Anchoring the squad is Gellenthien who has been hot as of late by winning the Ogden World Cup and finished second at the Turkey World Cup, which propelled him to the No. 1 spot with 236.25 points. Prior to these rankings, Gellenthien was ranked third. Four-time World Cup champion Sergio Pagni of Italy is now ranked second with 221.5 points.

Sliding into the No. 3 position in men’s individual compound is 2009 World Champion Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) with 199.45 points. Wilde finished third at the 2010 Croatia World Cup and was part of the gold-medal World Cup Team in Ogden. Making a drastic jump into the top 10 is Rodger Willet, Jr. (Glouchester, Va.), who is ranked seventh with 158.3 points. Willet is competing in his first international archery season that has been highlighted by a bronze-medal performance and fourth-place finish at the World Cup events in Ogden and Turkey, respectively.

Also, Erika Anschutz (Hamilton, Ohio) has maintained her No. 4 ranking in women’s individual compound. Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) has remained in her No. 7 slot in the world, while Brittany Lorenti (Trumbull, Conn.) improved two positions to No. 13 in women’s individual compound. Diane Watson (Hudson, Fla.) has moved into the top 20 and is ranked 19th with 91.9 points. This foursome of athletes has assisted in moving the U.S. team into the No. 2 world ranking in women’s compound with 285.3 points.

Two-time Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Bryan, Texas) jumped up six positions to No. 13 overall in women’s individual recurve. The U.S. women’s team is ranked 12th overall with 193 points.

The FITA World Rankings are determined by the ranking factor for each FITA approved World Ranking Tournament. The recent Olympic Games and World Championships play a significant role in the overall ranking points, while the World Cup events are included. The remaining tournaments are given a point value in the ranking, which is determined on the number of participants and the number of ranked athletes for these tournaments.
