Action at the halfway point at Winter World University Games selection event

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - With three rounds of action complete, no front runner has emerged yet as the team selection event for the Winter World University Games continues this weekend at the Fargo-Moorhead Curling Club.

Aanders Brorson (Duluth, Minn.) and Evan Workin (Fargo, N.D.) lead the standings with 2-1 records. Mike Stevens (Hibbing, Minn.) and Blake Morton (McFarland, Wis.) have 1-2 records with three games remaining for each team in the double round robin. The team with the best record will move on to represent the U.S. at the 2011 World University Games Jan. 27-Feb. 6 in Erzurum, Turkey.

Brorson and teammates Aaron Tasa (Bemidji, Minn.), John Landsteiner (Duluth, Minn.) and Joel Cooper (Minneapolis, Minn.) came into the competition as the top-ranked team and have won two straight games after a rocky start yesterday. In last night's action they handed the Stevens rink a 9-1 lopsided defeat. In this morning's action, Brorson's team needed just five ends of play to defeat Morton, 6-2. Meanwhile, Workin (Fargo, N.D.) and teammates Parker Shook (Fargo, N.D.), Braden Burckhard (Burlington, N.D.) and Ryan Westby (Minot, N.D.) suffered its first loss this morning when Stevens, a wildland firefighting student at Itasca Community College, led his team to an 8-3 win by capitalizing on key steals. This was the first win for Stevens (Hibbing, Minn.) and teammates Andrew Rootes (Chisholm, Minn.), William Howieson (Good Thunder, Minn.) and Benjamin Anderson (Mapleton, Minn.).

Team Morton, led by 19-year-old Blake Morton, a human resources and management student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, has suffered two straight losses after winning the opening match last night. This team advanced through a very competitive field to make it to the 2010 Men's National Championships last year and are the reigning Wisconsin junior men's champions.
Action continues with games at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. today.
