Americans Timothy Wang, of Houston, Texas, and Lily Zhang, Palo Alto, California, are the newest members of the United States Olympic team in the sport of table tennis. Zhang won the second women’s singles qualifying event, beating Canada’s Anqi Luo in the finals, 4-1. Wang qualified by winning the third men’s singles qualifying event, defeating Canada’s Hongtao Chen by a score of 4-3.
Canada’s Pierre Luc Hinse, who lost to teammate Andre Cho in the first men’s qualification tournament, punched his ticket to London with a victory in the second men’s qualification tournament.
American Erica Wu, of Arcadia, California, will serve as the country’s nominee to fill a third ladies position should the United States be awarded a team by the ITTF in May. Wu defeated teammate Judy Hugh by a score of 4-2 to take third amongst her teammates. Hugh finished the second qualification tournament in 6th place.
Michael Landers, Barney Reed, and Adam Hugh fell shy of earning Olympic berths. Reed finished the third men’s qualification tournament in fourth place, falling to teammate Wang in the semi-finals. Landers finished in fifth place after defeating teammate Hugh by a score of 4-1.
